One table had three legs while a daybed was clad with black velvet. Lamps were rectangular or simply shaped while chairs varied from largely geometrical to more curved.

All of the items' names begin with the letter "B."

Armani also unveiled a television he designed with South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. He has joined forces with Samsung to make a mobile phone, unveiled in September, and consumer electronics.

The lean liquid crystal display television comes with a stylish remote control and a special mode lighted power switch that customizes the Armani and Samsung logos. Playing on the screen on Wednesday were re-runs of fashion shows.

Armani Casa, which brought in 38 million euros in turnover last year, has outlets in 45 countries. It aims to open around 15 sales points this year, with locations in Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, New Delhi, Bahrain and Belgrade.

The 73-year-old Armani, known for his understated designs, said he found inspiration in the work of Eileen Gray, whose rounded Bibendum chair was one of the 20th century's most recognizable designs.

"There are so many people who are hungry for beautiful things," he said at the start of Milan's Furniture Salon Show.

The mock-up house in Milan, which hosts Armani's menswear and womenswear fashion shows, displayed rooms flowing into one another, with designs in black, white, ivory and natural colors. Only one cabinet displayed a bright orange interior.

"I did a bit of color a few seasons ago (and) I did not sell a (colored) cushion," he said.

Ebony or lacquered wood featured greatly in the objects on display, with some furnishings finished off with a glossy black pleated look. The rooms were decked out with screens.

"People who go to TommyTV and spontaneously want to get a pair of Tommy jeans will be able to do it," said Gehring.

For Sony BMG, the launch marks an experiment in the art of online music marketing. Global music sales fell around 10 percent in 2007 and the industry estimates that only one in 20 of the tracks downloaded was licensed, costing the industry potentially billions of dollars.

Online music purchasing marked a symbolic milestone when Apple Inc announced last week that its iTunes music store had surpassed Wal-Mart Stores Inc to become the largest U.S. music retailer.

"We are in a moment of transition moving away from the record model to music and entertainment," Sony BMG Chief Executive Maarten Steinkam said, adding that he hoped to discover bright young things through TommyTV.

Music-makers such as Madonna and David Bowie have long been seen as style icons, sartorial chameleons defining both themselves and their music through different looks.

"I literally became a fashion designer because of music," Hilfiger told Reuters at the launch. "Music was my first love, in the 60s - I wanted to dress like Mick Jagger, Pete Townshend, Jimmy Page."

Gehring said the site was intended as a marketing initiative to build its brand and would not be selling anything directly, although the two sides were discussing the possibility of charging for downloads in the future.

Tommy Hilfiger has built a worldwide fashion brand spanning women's, men's and children's wear to accessories and watches on marketing campaigns presenting hip, image savvy U.S. teenagers.

It has already moved to develop the brand in the music arena by hosting live gigs with only a few hundreds guests known as the Hilfiger Sessions.

Tommy Hilfiger Chief Executive Fred Gehring said the launch of TommyTV in collaboration with Sony BMG, home of artists Justin Timberlake and Leona Lewis, was a unique and momentous new stage in the fusion of the fashion and music worlds.

TommyTV, at https://www.tommytv.com, will show live performance by established and new artists sponsored by Tommy Hilfiger alongside exclusive interviews and backstage footage.

Designer Tommy Hilfiger, dapper in a pin stripe suit and orange tie, said the site would also host the Hilfiger Auditions, an online competition where young artists can showcase their talent.

"These musicians otherwise would not have that opportunity in many cases," Hilfiger said at the launch in London which kicked off with a live act by Parisian pop duo "One-Two."

At the new Versace Home boutique, which opened in Milan late on Wednesday, the theme was very much black and white for sofas and tables, with the odd silver detail on table legs and chairs.

China had the added Versace logo, as did silver and white vases. Arriving at the launch, Donatella Versace named a white chaise lounge as her favorite item in the store.

Versace branched out into homewear in the 1990s and the division turned 69.5 million euros ($110.9 million) in revenues last year. Chief Executive Giancarlo Di Risio told Reuters other openings were planned in Brussels, Dubai, New York and Paris.

Cube sofa chairs and low tables with layered interiors also featured.

Metals such as titanium were used, on display in the base of white and red chaises lounges. But possibly the centerpiece at the showing was a white bed with a stitched base and sparkly cover, surrounded by silver-sprayed branches in the atrium.

Versace also displayed a mock-up of its interiors for helicopters. The fashion house makes made-to-measure helicopter interiors and unveiled its first two to clients last month.

Design head Donatella Versace has moved the fashion collections away from the company's gold and glitter image to a more understated, wearable look.

Presenting its homewear line at the start of Milan's Furniture Salon fair, the Italian designer's show apartment in a 15th century Milan palazzo was divided in themed rooms ranging from Los Angeles to Tokyo to Rome.

As well as sticking to a hallmark black and white combination, Versace also used a selection of browns, greens, blues, purples and pink for its stylish sofas, beds and chairs.

In "Rome," dark blues were used for a high-back sofa and velvet bed, where slippers stitched with "The King" lay on one side. Brown high-back chairs added to the regal mood.

A long white table decorated with fine china filled "China," where a white period sofa and a majestic white bed were positioned at either end of the room. Shiny chandeliers hung from the ceiling and purple high-backed chairs also stood tall.

The eyewear group said in a statement the deal signed with Stella McCartney Ltd, a joint venture between the designer and Gucci, would begin in January for an initial six-year term.

Afterwards, it would be automatically renewable for an additional five-year term, it said.

The first collection will be launched in summer 2009.

Stella McCartney's luxury fashion and accessories label is part of French retail group PPR, which also owns Gucci and other luxury brands.

"We want to modernize the wedding vocabulary," said Wang post-show. "It's something we struggle with every season."

For Wang, who approached the dress the way an architect or sculptor might approach their work - in three dimensions, from all angles - the back of the dress became a particular point of interest this season, with some of the best dresses featuring lavish trains with artistically pleated or hand cut flowers or voluminous bustles.

"Making an entrance is important, but the exit is just as important," said Wang. "It offers even more opportunity for drama. For 50 percent of the wedding, the bride is viewed from the back, whether during the ceremony or for the first dance."

Wang, who also designs a women's ready-to-wear collection and her lower priced Lavender Label as well as a collection for Kohl's, will launch a new e-commerce web site from Wang, verawangonweddings.com. In addition to tips and articles for wedding planning, the site will feature a bridal registry where couples can select from a full range of Vera Wang merchandise, including the just launched Vera Wang Fine Linens collection.

For Wang's Spring 2009 bridal collection, which she presented in her showroom in New York on Thursday, April 17, the starting point was Hollywood glamour of the 1930s through the 1950s of silver screen sirens such as Jean Harlow, Rita Hayworth, Marilyn Monroe and Ava Gardner. Details like pleated organza ruffles or floral corsages on one shoulder, fractal-like spiraling hand-cut floral trains, hand-pleating or asymmetrically draped necklines and asymmetrically placed bows literally put a twist on the traditional bridal silhouettes, adding dramatic points of focus. Exquisitely rendered, these elements exuded not only luxury but also gave the dresses a modern sophistication that only good design can impart.
